A quick, easy and reliable highly controlled test method to replicate solid particle erosion tests and help you design more erosion-resistant materials – could this be what you are looking for ?
Micro Materials is pleased to confirm that our patent on Randomised Impact Testing has been granted!
(📣GB 262 4893,📣 published on 8th January 2025 in the Patents and Designs Journal (Section 25(1))
The patent’s “parents”-Micro Materials’ Prof Ben Beake, Dr Stephen Goodes and Dr James F. Smith developed the novel randomised impact technique in our Wrexham HQ’s research facility. Micro Materials’ unique nano-impact test has been developed to create spatially-distributed nano- or micro-scale impacts to simulate solid particle erosion.
The technique is particularly well suited for studying damage mechanisms on thermal barrier coatings and exhibits excellent correlation to erosion tests, both in terms of damage mechanism and wear rate.

The test can be adapted by changing the impact load, test probe geometry, impact angle or test temperature as required, enabling complete characterization of erosion resistance under relevant in-service conditions.
