We are proud to announce that Micro Materials Ltd has recently supplied a NanoTest Xtreme system to the Nanomechanical Properties Group at the  National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA.   — a world-leading U.S. government agency dedicated to advancing measurement science, standards, and technology.

NIST is one of the USA's oldest physical science laboratories and its world-class measurement science determines the physical and chemical properties of a wide variety of organic, inorganic, biomolecular and hybrid systems, where materials are in the nanoscale regime.    NIST's  standards, methods, reference materials and measurement data advance a wide range of technologies and stimulate innovation.

4 researchers at NIST have been awarded Nobel Prizes since 1997.

Among its specialized research groups, the Nanomechanical Properties Group focuses on the characterization of material properties at the nanoscale, providing critical insights into mechanical behavior at this level, including hardness, modulus, and wear resistance. This group uses cutting-edge instrumentation to conduct precise and reliable measurements that support both scientific research and industrial applications.

The NanoTest Xtreme, recognized globally for its exceptional performance, aligns perfectly with NIST’s commitment to cutting-edge measurement science. As the most flexible multi-load range, high-vacuum nanomechanical testing platform available, it enables unparalleled capabilities in:

  • Nanoindentation
  • Scratch and wear testing
  • Friction measurement
  • High strain rate impact testing
  • High-temperature testing, up to and exceeding 1000°C

This installation supports NIST's continued leadership in precision materials characterization and strengthens the global standards framework for nanoscale mechanical testing.

We are honored to contribute to NIST’s pioneering efforts and excited to support their future breakthroughs in nanomechanical research.
