Residual stresses in coated components can influence their performance. Micro Materials have been collaborating with GP Plasma and SIOMEC to study residual stress profiles in thin hard coatings.
By performing a grid of indentations within a calotte crater with the NanoTest Vantage and analysing the results with the unique SIO software, it was possible to produce a detailed map of the through-thickness stress profile in the studied PECVD coating. The results showed higher tensile stress at the interface, implying a weakened interface likely to suffer adhesion problems in service.
