New Publication: Micro-scale impact testing – A new approach to studying fatigue resistance in hard carbon coatings

Micro Materials and collaborators from the University of Leeds and Southeast University are pleased to present our latest publication in Tribology International: Micro-scale impact testing – A new approach to studying fatigue resistance in hard carbon coatings

In this study micro-impact results on two commercial hard carbon coatings (Graphit-iC and Dymon-iC from Teer Coatings) on tool steel are presented. The role of coating mechanical properties on the fatigue resistance and the load-sensitivity of the impact failure mechanism is discussed.

The novel micro-scale rapid impact test is capable of producing repetitive impacts at significantly higher strain rate and energy than in the nano-impact test. This enables the study of coating fatigue with less sharp spherical indenters which is particularly well suited for coatings that are too hard or too thick for the nano-impact test.
